In 1965, Arnold Schwarzenegger was drafted into the Austrian army. He was 18 years old ... According to the memoirs of Arnie himself, he sought to go to the army himself - just to leave his parental home. Schwarzenegger was assigned to serve in a tank division. It was there that he gained knowledge about the basics of mechanics and, in addition to the tank, learned to drive a motorcycle, cars and trucks, and even a tractor with a trailer.
This is how the former Terminator General of California himself recalls his service.
One day I went AWOL, drove to Stuttgart and won the title of European Young Athlete with the best physique in 1965. Unfortunately, when I returned to the training camp, I was sent to a guardhouse, and spent the whole day in a cell. Then the news of my victory reached the authorities, and I was released.
I carefully performed all the maneuvers, but various troubles happened to me. It happened that the driver-mechanics had to stay overnight with their tanks. We dug a shallow hole in the ground, put a blanket in it, and drove a tank from above. This was done in order to protect themselves from wild boars.
One day we camped near a stream, and at night I woke up and realized that there was nothing above me. My tank is gone! I found it thirty paces away: the front part went under water, the gun was buried in the mud. I forgot to put it on the handbrake. We had to call in an eighty-ton tractor, and it took several hours to get my tank out of the water. I had to remove the turret and clean the cannon in the armory. For this misconduct, I spent a day in the guardhouse.
One morning I started the engine, adjusted the seat and felt the tank shaking a little. I thought: "Probably need to add gas so that it works more steadily." So I added gas, but the shaking only intensified. Then I noticed dust swirling in the air. Leaning out of the hatch, I found that instead of simply warming up the engine, I shifted into gear, and the tank ran into the wall of the hangar. Then a pipe burst, water splashed in all directions, and there was a smell of gasoline.
Jumping out, I ran to look for the chief officer who knew my father. I thought I could only rely on him. I saw him just that morning, and he said something like, "I just ran into your dad the other day and told him how well you're doing."
I knocked on his door and said:
Sir, I think I messed up a little.
He was still in a great mood:
Don't you worry about it! What is it, Arnold?
Well, you'd better take a look yourself.
He replied:
As we walked, he patted my back, still in good spirits, as if to say, "You're doing well."
Then he saw splashing water, guys running around, and a tank in a breach in the wall. His attitude towards me changed at that moment: he yelled, called me everything, mentioned that he was going to call my father and tell him about the same thing that he mentioned earlier, but exactly the opposite. He even had veins in his neck. Then he cooled down and said sharply: “When I return from lunch, everything should be restored. This is the only way for you to get away from punishment. Gather your soldiers and get on with it."
The good thing about the army is that it is self-sufficient. The division had its own masons, plumbers and building materials. Luckily, the roof didn't collapse and something terrible didn't happen on something like this. And my tank was made of steel, of course, so it had no damage. The guys thought the incident was very funny, everyone was eager to help, so I didn’t have to strain too much to organize the process. By noon, the pipes and the wall were restored, it remained to wait until everything was dry in order to start plastering work. I was in a normal mood, because. got the opportunity to get acquainted with the preparation of mortar and laying cinder blocks. Of course, I had to put up with the fact that the entire base teased me: “Ah, I heard about your tank.” I also spent the whole week in outfits out of turn: I peeled potatoes with other delinquents in a place where everyone could see us when we went to a meal.
By the spring of 1966, I began to think that the army was not so obligatory for me. I filed an early dismissal report, but it lay dormant for several months. At the end of spring we had a twelve-hour night exercise. By two o'clock in the morning the company moved into position on the top of the hill, and the order came to halt.
I was talking on the radio with a friend who had just received a new M-60 Patton tank equipped with a diesel engine. A friend recklessly boasted that his tank was much faster than mine. Unable to restrain myself, I offered him to prove it, and we rushed down the slope. I felt that I needed to stop - but I won. The rest of the guys in my tank were screaming at me to stop, but I thought it was the driver of the second tank trying to confuse me in order to win. Having gone down to the foot of the hill, I began to look for the M-60. And only then did I notice a soldier clinging to the turret of our tank as if his life depended on it. As it turned out, he and two other infantrymen were sitting on the armor when I rushed down. The other two jumped or fell, but this one managed to hold on until the very end.
We turned on our headlights and moved back up the slope, slowly so as not to run into anyone, picking up the lost foot soldiers. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. When we got to the top, there were already three officers waiting for us in a jeep. I drove past them and, as if nothing had happened, put the tank back in its place.
As soon as I got out of the hatch, all three officers at once began to shout at me. I stood at attention until they had finished. When the screams finally died down, one officer stepped forward, flashed his eyes at me, and then burst into laughter.
Schwarzenegger, the driver, he ordered, bring your tank here.
I obey!
I put the tank where he indicated. Climbing out of the hatch, I found myself standing in deep viscous mud.
And now, driver Schwarzenegger, I want you to crawl under the bottom of your tank. When you get out from under the stern, climb on the tank, go down through the tower inside and leave the tank through the emergency hatch in the bottom. Then you do it all over again.
The officer ordered me to complete this circle 50 times.
When I finished four hours later, I had 10 kilograms of mud on me and I could hardly move. I left another 50 kilograms of dirt inside the tank, climbing through it. At the base, I had to clean everything. That officer could have put me in a guardhouse for a week, but I must admit that this punishment turned out to be much more effective.
A few weeks after this incident, I was called to the authorities. The officer said to me with a smile: “Since your presence here poses a certain danger to others, we have decided to satisfy your report and release you ahead of schedule. We don't need you to keep destroying tanks."
Many years later, Iron Arnie found the very tank he served in, bought it and put it in his backyard as a keepsake.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is not only one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood and the former Governor of California. He is also a car collector. Let's look at the coolest Terminator cars.
Dodge Challenger SRT8
How could the seven-time Mr. Olympia winner be without a muscle car in his garage? Schwarzenegger has a wonderful Dodge Challenger SRT8 in his collection - bright orange, with signature stripes from nose to tail.
At the time of its introduction, the Challenger SRT8 was Dodge's most powerful muscle car: equipped with a 6.1-liter V8 HEMI engine, it had 425 horsepower. Now Schwarzenegger is actively eyeing the Challenger Hellcat - perhaps a replacement is coming.
Excalibur Series III Phaeton
One of the favorite cars of "Iron Arnie", driving which he can often be seen in Los Angeles. A vivid example of a neoclassical convertible (despite the silhouette in the style of pre-war cars, the technical component of the Excalibur cars was quite modern in its time).
Convertible Schwarzenegger - a representative of the third series of the brand. The car was produced from 1975 to 1979 and was equipped with a 7.5-liter Chevrolet "Big Block" engine with a capacity of 215 forces. One of the most popular Excalibur models.
Hummer H1
The Terminator is very fond of military vehicles, and you will see this more than once. For example, he has a Hummer H1, and not one, but two - in open and closed versions. The open green Hummer has a "fossil fuel" sticker on the back - Schwarzenegger is an environmentalist, so it's not banter.
The second sand-colored H1 has an armored body, Terminator stickers on the sides and a hydrogen power plant. The Hummer H1 is a civilian model of the M998 Humvee military vehicle and was produced from 1992 to 2006.
Dodge M37
Another military car that settled in Arnie's garage. In it, Schwarzenegger travels mainly to thematic events dedicated to cars of the war years.
M37 participated in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. It was produced from 1951 to 1968 at Dodge factories in the USA and Canada. Under the hood is a six-cylinder 3.8-liter carburetor engine with a power reserve of 78 forces.
Ferrari 360 Spider
This is a car that left Schwarzenegger's garage in 2011, but it's definitely worth a mention. The car was sold on eBay for $92,000 with a mileage of 20,950 kilometers.
The elegant spider was produced by Ferrari from 2000 to 2005. In front of the rear axle is a 3.6-liter V8 engine with 400 horsepower. The car came with a six-speed "mechanics" or an F1 robotic box, Arnold's car came with just a "robot".
Jeep Grand Wagoneer
Another car that Schwarzenegger has already managed to sell. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer "Governator" was prepared by the famous California office West Coast Customs and has a 6.6-liter Duramax Diesel engine with almost 500 horsepower under its hood.
In the cabin - alligator skin, a powerful speaker system, as well as floor mats with the inscriptions "Hasta La Vista Baby". The unique Jeep went to the buyer in 2015 for 85 thousand dollars.
Mercedes Unimog
Well, another car that was, but swam away. Mercedes Unimog Arnold Schwarzenegger Edition was sold two years ago in Germany for 208 thousand euros. The autograph of "Schwartz" on the front panel, of course, is attached.
The 7.5-ton Unimog has a 6.3-liter diesel engine with 320 horsepower under the hood. In addition to the huge ground clearance, winch and additional Hella headlights, parking sensors are included in the package. Iron Arnie's car is based on the Unimog U1300, which was released in 1977.
Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet
What car collection would be complete without the Porsche 911? Iron Arnie also has such a car - a silver-colored 911 Turbo in a 997 body. In the best traditions of California, the body is a convertible.
The 997th Turbo is equipped with a classic boxer biturbo "six" with a volume of 3.8 liters. 480 forces and 620 Nm allow the convertible to accelerate to 310 km/h.
Bentley Continental GT Supersports Convertible
There are never too many convertibles - that's what Arnie thinks, living in sunny California. One of the gems of his collection is the Bentley Continental GT Supersports Convertible.
At the time of its introduction in 2010, the Supersports Convertible was the fastest Bentley open car in history. Its bi-turbo W12 has 630 horsepower in its arsenal, which makes it possible to travel at speeds of over 320 km/h.
Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster
Choosing between "gull wings" and the sky above his head, Schwarzenegger preferred the second option, and therefore acquired a Mercedes SLS in the back of a Roadster. The "Silver Arrow" is complemented by a spectacular red fabric top.
SLS until recently was the flagship of the Mercedes lineup. A naturally aspirated V8 engine is installed under the long hood, developing 571 horsepower. Acceleration to 100 km / h in the roadster takes 3.7 seconds. The maximum speed is 317 km/h.
Mercedes G-class by Kreisel
One of Schwarzenegger's latest acquisitions, the G350d, commissioned by Iron Arnie, was converted into an electric car equipped with two battery packs and 490 horsepower electric motors.
The car exists in a single copy. The car from Kreisel differs from the ordinary Gelendewagen in emblems, a modified dashboard, and the presence of a charging outlet instead of a fuel filler neck.
Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse
One of the most expensive and fastest cars on the planet, the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, also got into the Schwarzenegger collection. Hopefully, cigar ash doesn't fall on the hypercar's flawless leather upholstery.
Every self-respecting car enthusiast knows the characteristics of the top Veyron: W16 engine, four turbines, 1200 horsepower and 410 km / h of maximum speed. In the secondary market, such cars rarely lose value.
M47 Patton
And what else can the protagonist of the films "Commando" and "Terminator" drive? The M47 is Schwarzenegger's favorite toy - he enjoys spending his weekends destroying old family station wagons on a tank.
M47 was produced from 1951 to 1953. 8676 similar combat vehicles were produced. In addition to powerful armor, the tank boasts a V12 engine with 810 horsepower, as well as a 90mm M36 cannon. In the army, the M47 was operated until 1990.
Today, an interesting video appeared on the Internet, in which the main role was given to the film legend, 71-year-old actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. In it, the famous "Terminator" did a rather unusual thing - he crushed a 9-meter Lincoln TownCar limousine with his tank. Fortunately, this video was not made to scare the owners of these expensive cars, but in order to become part of a series of programs called “Make it!”.

Schwarzenegger gave Leno a ride on his own tank
A week ago, 71-year-old Arnold became the protagonist of a program called "Make it!", which airs on CNBC. In the episode with Schwarzenegger, show host Jay Leno talked to the famous actor about his tank, which was purchased by Arnold many years ago, and also invited him to show what this car is capable of. A very expensive car was chosen as an obstacle for the M47 Patton II tank. Jay offered Arnold a ride on a 9-meter Lincoln TownCar limousine that was parked near a giant car with a muzzle. However, before doing so, Schwarzenegger told Leno about what his tank was like. It turned out that the M47 Patton II weighs almost 50 tons, is quite easy to fly and very maneuverable. These tanks began to be produced by the United States in 1950, and they were developed for participation in the Korean War. The green giants proved themselves so well that very soon the United States began to export tanks to other countries of the world. As for Schwarzenegger, he learned how to drive a military machine while serving in the army, and he fell in love with it so much that he set on fire the dream of acquiring the same one for himself. Over time, the actor brought his idea to life and now he has a tank with the number 331 in his garage next to expensive foreign cars.

Schwarzenegger needs M47 Patton II for educational purposes
Despite the fact that the green giant looks quite intimidating in the CNBC video, the 71-year-old actor uses it for positive purposes. So, in a conversation with Jay Leno, Arnold explained that he gives children a ride on a tank. True, this award must be earned, because only good students can sit with me in the M47 Patton II. Here are the words Schwarzenegger said about this:
“I am very glad that I can somehow positively influence the upbringing of children. I have contracts with some educational institutions in the USA, under the terms of which I can bring children as part of the extracurricular activity program. I tell them about the tank and show them how it can drive. I let the best climb into the cockpit with me and evaluate its power and performance from the inside.

Arnold Schwarzenegger turns 66 on July 30th. During this time, Schwarzenegger managed to try himself as a bodybuilder, businessman, and even a politician. Over time, Schwarzenegger began to show interest in the field of technology. For 66 years, the actor has acquired very unusual means of transportation. We decided to recall the 4 most expensive purchases of an actor related to his hobby, which at the same time became the most expensive things ever bought by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
private jet
Schwarzenegger acquired a personal jet in the summer of 1997. The Gulfstream private jet cost the actor $38 million. Then information about Arnie's flights on a private plane was not particularly disclosed, and in 2000 Schwarzenegger sold his "iron bird" at all, but soon got himself a new one, "Gulfstream 3", which he was presented as a fee for the role of Terminator T800.
Cabin-apartment on the liner
In 2002, Arnie acquired a luxurious cabin apartment on the liner The World. The length of the ship was 200 meters, and the height was about 10 floors. This liner was the first marine passenger ship made as a private home. Schwarzenegger's luxurious cabin-apartment includes literally everything that is in an ordinary apartment on the shore, and even more - a bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom, and balconies. The price of the ship was more than $7 million, and there are 110 such exclusive cabins on the liner. The owners of the cabins themselves can live on the ship around the clock, travel around the world, appear on the ship whenever they want, or rent out their luxury apartments.
Tank
In 2002, Arnie, a technology lover, decided to purchase a tank. Once he served in the Austrian army and sat behind the wheel of an American M-47 armored vehicle. It was this tank that Schwarzenegger decided to purchase from the Austrian government - a “toy” specially for him from under near the Hungarian border. The tank was purchased for $1.4 million and transported to the US. To ride a tank, Schwarzenegger decided to lay a special massive road next to his California ranch. “For me, a tank is not a weapon, I just like to drive it,” Schwarzenegger assured journalists. Often the actor rides children on his tank or uses it as film props, but until he uses it himself, he gives it to the military museum of the city of Groveport.
Car
Schwarzenegger has always liked exclusive and expensive cars. A few years ago, Schwarzenegger even had a personal fleet, but due to the struggle for a clean environment, the actor abandoned a large number of cars. In 2011, in one of the elite car dealerships in Los Angeles, the actor purchased his most expensive car in his "collection" - a sports Bentley Continental. The car is the fastest convertible in the world. The actor managed to buy a car even before this series appeared on the world market, for half a million dollars, and now rides his favorite car at a speed of 325 kilometers per hour. Of course, when the police are not visible on the horizon.
