What is vegetative lability
The autonomic nervous system, or autonomic nervous system, is the part of the nervous system that regulates the functioning of the internal organs (heart, stomach, intestines, and others), as well as the circulatory and lymphatic systems. Under its control are also numerous glands of our body. Thus, for example, perspiration, blood pressure, pulse rate, the ability to thermoregulate, and much more depend on the autonomic nervous system. It plays an important role in stressful situations that require a person to respond in the form of "fight or flight". How well a person rests (here we mean physical, bodily relaxation), and how the food he eats is digested and assimilated largely depends on her work.
If a person can control the processes occurring under the “beginning” of the central nervous system to a certain extent, then the functioning of the autonomic nervous system is beyond his control.
However, there are techniques that supposedly help a person gain control over some of the functions for which she is responsible (for example, slow the heartbeat), but their action is poorly understood, and their development takes a very long time.
The two main divisions of the autonomic nervous system are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems (SNS and PNS, respectively). The first of them is mainly responsible for the more active (at least outwardly) activity of the organism, in particular, for the fight or flight reaction, which was mentioned above. When exposed to a stressor that makes a person choose to fight or fight, SNS, for example, causes an increase in blood pressure and an increase in heart rate. The PNS is responsible for digestion, lowering blood pressure, as well as for the functioning of the endocrine system and metabolism.
In a healthy person, the vegetative system adequately responds to external stimuli - temperature, stress , and others. In patients with autonomic lability, normal stimuli may produce abnormal responses. For example, when exposed to the slightest stressor, their blood pressure can rise sharply, they can sweat a lot when the air temperature is not too high, and so on. Vegetative lability is not an independent disease; it may be the first sign of vascular dystonia (VVD) or, less commonly, other disorders. By the way, the VVD itself is often also a sign of various disorders. We will talk about the causes of vegetative lability below.
Researchers believe that worldwide the number of people who have more or less pronounced autonomic lability is in the tens, if not hundreds of millions. Many patients do not pay attention to its signs for a long time or deliberately ignore them, believing that they are the result of stress, fatigue, and will soon disappear on their own.

The nervous system of the body includes a number of interacting systems, which ensures the normal coordinated work of a significant part of the body's systems and helps to adapt in a timely manner when conditions of the external or internal environment change. One part of the nervous system is the autonomic nervous system, better known as the autonomic nervous system.
Its functions include responsibility for the normal operation of many internal organs, systems, glands. In addition, the normal level of sweating, blood pressure, thermoregulation and much more depend on the stable functioning of the nervous system.
A person does not have the ability to control the functioning of the vegetative system. It is not surprising that with certain disorders of the autonomic system, there are problems with well-being. One of these problems is vegetative lability. What is behind this term? What can cause this condition to appear? What signs indicate the presence of vegetative lability in a patient? How dangerous is this condition?
General information
With the normal functioning of the vegetative system of the body, when the host body is exposed to various external stimuli (nervous strain, stressful situation, sound and temperature stimuli, etc.), the system responds adequately. In the event of such a disorder of the autonomic system as autonomic lability, the reaction of the patient's body can be unpredictable.
Even with a slight exposure to irritants, the patient may experience such manifestations as sudden changes in blood pressure (more often upwards), increased sweating, a concomitant decrease in body temperature, and others. It should be noted that autonomic lability does not belong to the category of idiopathic. Most often, this is one of the symptoms of the development of vegetative-vascular dystonia in a patient (one of the most common disorders of the human autonomic system, the signs of which are manifested to one degree or another in almost 80% of the world's population).
Causes
Vegetative lability does not occur for no reason. Usually this is the result of exposure to a number of factors favorable for the development of this disorder of the autonomic system, namely:- negative impact on the patient's body of a number of infectious diseases;
- intoxication of the body;
- a variety of injuries, especially craniocerebral;
- against the background of surgical intervention, as a concomitant condition;
- deficiency of vitamins of a certain group (most often some B vitamins and vitamin E);
- adverse environmental conditions;
- failure of the hormonal background (more often in women in a state of pregnancy or menopause);
- psychological trauma suffered by the patient in childhood.
Signs of autonomic lability:
- a state of general weakness;
- increased level of fatigue;
- periodic dizziness, fainting;
- violation of normal sweating;
- dysfunction of the digestive tract (bloating, constipation, etc.);
- violations of thermoregulation of the body;
- arrhythmia, palpitations;
- sleep disorders;
- trembling of the limbs.
How dangerous is vegetative lability?
In the absence of timely diagnosis and comprehensive treatment under the supervision of specialists, this disorder of the autonomic system can provoke the development of a number of diseases and pathological conditions, including severe ones: diseases and pathologies of the heart and cardiovascular system, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. There are also frequent cases of mental disorders in the patient.Reading time: 4 min
Lability is a concept used to refer to mobility. The scope can slightly change the semantic characteristics, denoting both the number of nerve impulses transmitted per unit of time by the cell, and the speed of starting and stopping mental processes.
Lability characterizes the rate of flow (from the onset of a reaction to inhibition) of elementary processes, and is measured by the highest frequency of impulse reproduction without changes in the work of the tissue and the recovery time of functions. This indicator is not considered a constant value, since it can change from external factors (heat, time of day, force effects), the effects of chemicals (produced by the body or used) and emotional states, so it is possible to observe only the dynamics and predisposition of the body, the prevailing level. It is the change in lability indicators that is the key in the diagnosis of various diseases and norms.
What is lability
In scientific application, lability is used synonymously with mobility (in the norm), instability (in pathology) and variability (as characteristics of the dynamics of the state and processes). To understand the breadth of the use of this term, we can consider examples of what is the lability of the mood of body temperature, psyche and physiology, and, accordingly, is applicable to all processes that have speed, constancy, rhythm, amplitude and other dynamic characteristics in their indicators.
The course of any body processes is regulated by the nervous system, therefore, even speaking about indicators of pulse or mood lability, we are still talking about the degree of lability of the nervous system (central or autonomic, depending on the localization of instability). The autonomic nervous system regulates internal organs and systems, respectively, the general state of the body depends on its work, the ability to maintain the rhythm and stability of processes.
Vegetative lability brings disturbances in the work of the heart (manifestations find themselves in the form of arrhythmias, problems with pressure and quality), the work of the glands (problems with sweating or the production of substances necessary for the proper functioning of the body may begin). Many seemingly psychological problems or those related to the central nervous system are actually solved at the level of reducing autonomic lability, which ensures productive sleep and the absorption of useful trace elements. At the same time, it is worth remembering that signaling the level of stress or a critical emotional situation is primarily not the central, but the autonomic system, by increasing its lability. The mechanisms that activate the work of all organ systems to overcome difficult or extreme situations involve the internal reserves of the body, forcing the heart to speed up the rhythm, the lungs to absorb more air, the gland to remove excess adrenaline with sweat, and only then the CNS reactions are connected.
Lability of the nervous system or mental lability is characterized by a pathological state of mood disturbance, expressed in its swings and inconstancy. The condition may be the norm for adolescence, but it can be included in the spectrum of pathological conditions for adults and requires medical attention, as well as the work of a psychologist, even without prescribing drugs.
Lability in psychology
Mental lability, considered in psychology, implies its mobility, and in some cases, instability, while science itself studies only this aspect of lability, without going into physiology. In most sources, the lability of the psyche is considered as a negative quality that requires correction, but it does not pay tribute to the fact that this is the main adaptive mechanism of the psyche. It was the speed of reaction and switching between quickly and often unexpectedly changing events of external life that helped humanity survive. The opposite is the psyche, when for a long time a person remains constant, and any changes knock him out of his normal state. Any of these characteristics in its extreme manifestation is negative, and with moderate indicators it gives its pluses.
Problems with lability when a person comes to a psychologist are associated with frequent mood swings, while all spectra are lived not superficially, but really deeply workplace and give candy to passers-by - all within one hour). It is the difficulties in coping with one’s own and the lack of understanding how this can be corrected that brings many, and not only mental suffering, but the subsequent changes in health, since the vegetative system, being subject to emotional states, also increases its level of lability.
Such phenomena can be justified by the type of organization of the nervous system, so in people with the speed of reactions is already due to nature, and accordingly, an increase in lability to a pathological state is more likely. Also, frequent, received at an early age, being in traumatic situations at the moment can provoke mood swings. But we should not exclude the physiological causes that affect the psychological state of a person: brain tumors, TBI, vascular diseases.
Correction of such unpleasant conditions begins with the diagnosis and exclusion of physiological causes, then, if necessary, correction with mood-stabilizing drugs (antidepressants and tranquilizers) is possible, accompanied by a course of psychotherapy. With a severe degree, treatment in a hospital may be relevant, with the mildest one, you can cope by visiting a psychologist, without interrupting your usual life.
Lability in physiology
In physiology, lability is considered as a property of a tissue that characterizes its change during prolonged excitation. Reactions to prolonged excitation can be expressed in three types of response: response to each impulse, transformation of the initial rhythm into a rarer one (for example, a response to every third impulse), or termination of the response. For each cell of the body, this rhythm is different, while it may differ from the rhythm of the organ consisting of these cells, as well as from the rhythm of the entire organ system. The faster the tissue reacts to irritation, the higher its lability is considered, but at the same time there are few indicators of only this time, it is also necessary to take into account the time required for recovery. So, the reaction can be quite fast, but due to the long recovery time, the overall lability will be quite low.
Lability increases or decreases depending on the needs of the body (a variant of the norm is considered, without diseases), so it can increase from the metabolic rate, which causes all systems to accelerate the rhythm of work. An increase in lability has been noticed, that when the body is in a working active state, i.e. your tissue lability is significantly higher if you run than if you read lying down, and the readings remain at an elevated value for some time after the cessation of vigorous activity. Such reactions are associated with the assimilation of a rhythm that meets the current environmental conditions and activity needs.
The regulation of physiological lability can also be addressed in violations of the psychological spectrum, since many conditions have as their root cause not mental disorders or emotional experiences, but physiological disorders. For example, physiological effects can remove sleep problems, which will automatically increase the level of attention and reduce, the therapy of which, without taking into account physiological indicators, would be ineffective.
Intellectual lability
Intellectual lability is one of the components of the lability of the nervous system and is responsible for the processes of switching between the processes of activation and inhibition. In life, this looks like a fairly high level of mental development and the ability to logically analyze incoming information. Since every second a critically huge number of information blocks that require, it becomes necessary to sort them as quickly as possible (at a subconscious automatic level) into significant and not significant.
The presence of a large knowledge base in becomes irrelevant and indicates not about, but about erudition, much more significant is the ability to switch between different sources of information, between different information in meaning, and also quickly move on to solving the next (albeit opposite) task . At this switching speed, the main thing is to maintain the ability to be able to highlight the main thing for the task at hand at a given time. It is this process of intellectual work that ensures high intellectual lability.
Previously, they did not know about this property, then they spoke, but rarely, and now, when the pace of life is accelerating, the amount of information consumed is growing at such a rate that a person who lived two hundred years ago would need a month to realize what we process within an hour , this becomes the determining factor for success. This gives the ability to adequately and most usefully respond to changing conditions, contributes to the instantaneous analysis of many factors, which minimizes the possibility of error.
In addition, quick switching between different topics and issues gives non-standard thinking, new ways of solving old problems, there is a rapid assimilation of knowledge and skills, and this happens at a deeper level. For example, historical data on the same event, gleaned from different sources (here you can’t do without using the capabilities of the modern world) gives a more objective and comprehensive understanding than quoting the point of view of the author of the textbook. The ability to learn quickly is due to the fact that there is no need to tune in to the flow of material - a ten-minute reading of an article in a minibus, accompanied by listening to new music or writing a diploma with breaks to watch training videos, becomes a familiar way of functioning, providing new opportunities.
Emotional lability
Mood lability, which is the main reflection of emotional lability, is the variability of the mood pole, often without expressed reasons for this. The nervous system is responsible for our emotional state, and when it is weakened, it becomes hypersensitive, which explains the instantaneous and strong reaction to even minor stimuli. Coloring can be any - both happiness and, with equal ease, aggressive affects and apathetic sadness arise.
Symptoms may include spontaneity of actions, impulsiveness, lack and ability to predict the consequences of one's own actions. The occurrence of affective outbursts and uncontrollable states for insignificant or absent reasons caused emotional lability to be included in the lists of psychiatric abnormalities requiring stabilization under the supervision of a physician. It may also not be a separate disease, but a symptom of more dangerous and complex ones (severe tumors, pressure problems, hidden consequences of traumatic brain injuries, etc.). It is difficult to diagnose in childhood, because it is little studied and often confused with, therefore, a team of specialists from a psychiatrist, psychologist and neuropathologist is needed for diagnosis.
Emotional instability is manifested in restlessness, lack of patience and acute reaction to criticism or obstacles, there are difficulties in establishing logical chains, as well as mood swings. These swings are different from manic-depressive disorder and are characterized by a rapid change of states with the same deep experience of the emotional spectrum.
Any overload of the nervous system contributes to this development of the emotional sphere: emotional stress, psychotrauma or their actualization, hyper- or hypoattention from society, hormonal changes (adolescence and menopause, pregnancy). Of the physiological reasons: somatic diseases, vitamin deficiency (especially of group B, necessary to maintain the work of the National Assembly), as well as difficult physical conditions.
If emotional lability is put as a diagnosis, then a psychiatrist should deal with its correction, if the condition is not so deplorable, then a course of prevention is also prescribed by a psychologist. In any case, it is not worth treating such manifestations with disdain, explaining with a bad character.

Vegetative neurosis (vegetative neurosis) is a group of diseases that occur when the functioning of the higher centers of the autonomic nervous system is disrupted. With this disease, the patient may complain of pain and other disorders in various organs, while the examination will not reveal any structural changes in them. This can be explained by the fact that the autonomic nervous system is only a part of the general nervous system, acting as a kind of connecting link between the organs of the human body. The centers of its regulation are located in various parts of the hypothalamus.
The main functions that the autonomic nervous system is endowed with are to regulate metabolic processes in the body, activate its internal forces, restore spent energy and control the activity of all systems during sleep. In addition, the autonomic nervous system has a direct impact on human behavior, his mental and physical activity. Violation of the above functions can cause the development of a wide variety of pathological conditions.
Manifestations of vegetative neuroses can have psychopathological or neurosomatic somatics. With neurosomatic vegetative neurosis, disturbances in the activity of the digestive, genitourinary, cardiovascular and respiratory systems are most often observed. Patients often experience various disorders of speech and motor function, sensitivity disorders, migraines and other unpleasant symptoms. Psychopathological vegetative neurosis is characterized mainly by mental disorders: asthenia, phobic and depressive disorder, etc.
Causes of the disease
The most likely causes of vegetative neurosis are considered to be the following factors:
![](https://i2.wp.com/odepressii.ru/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/stress1.jpg)
Very often, the causes of the development of an illness in adults lie in their distant childhood, if at that time there were serious psychological traumas associated, for example, with violence or inappropriate behavior of adults. An internal conflict, which subsequently degenerates into a vegetative neurosis, occurs in children not only from dysfunctional families, but also with an elementary lack of attention and love from their parents. Very often, the defiant behavior of children is not regarded by parents as a sign of illness, but this is their main mistake. In adulthood, any conflict situations in the family and in the work team can provoke the development of vegetative neurosis, causing an acute feeling of internal protest.
In some cases, the progression of vegetative disorders can be observed with hormonal fluctuations in the body. In women, this phenomenon often occurs during menopause or during pregnancy. Intoxication of the body, changes in climatic zones and even unfavorable environmental conditions can affect the occurrence of the disease.
signs
The clinical picture of autonomic neurosis is represented by a wide variety of different symptoms and syndromes. In addition to the disorders of the genitourinary, cardiovascular and digestive systems characteristic of this disease, very often patients experience the so-called vasomotor syndrome, which is characterized by frequent headaches, pressure surges, and in some cases joint and muscle pains are added to such symptoms.
Another characteristic sign of vegetative neurosis is asthenic syndrome, characterized by constant and causeless weakness, which is felt even after a full night's sleep. Fatigue, attention disturbances, irritability, sudden mood swings, increased sensitivity to bright lights and loud sounds - all these symptoms clearly indicate asthenia.
Other syndromes that are typical signs of vegetative neurosis include:

Among the symptoms indicating violations of the cardiovascular system in case of vegetative neurosis, a heart rhythm disturbance in a patient, cardialgia, etc. are often detected. At the same time, pathological conditions do not arise due to real heart diseases, therefore, treatment with appropriate medications is not required. Pain that occurs with vegetative cardialgia is called false. Very often they are accompanied by a rapid heartbeat and a feeling of sinking heart, which is very disturbing for patients.
As a rule, a person with vegetative neurosis combines several of the above syndromes at once. To make a correct diagnosis and exclude the presence of organic diseases, complex diagnostics are necessary. Only after a full examination can adequate and effective therapy be prescribed.
Diagnostic methods
Diagnosis of the disease is carried out on the basis of the existing clinical picture only after the exclusion of organic pathologies. The task of a specialist is to determine as accurately as possible the organ or system of the body that suffers the most. To confirm the nature of vegetative neurosis, a study of some specific somatic and skin reflexes is performed. At the same time, so-called vegetative asymmetry is often observed in patients. To assess the degree of excitability of the sympathetic nervous system, a study of dermographism is carried out.
Therapy
The treatment prescribed for vegetative neurosis has the main goal of normalizing and regulating the activity of the autonomic nervous system. To do this, it is very important to develop the correct regimen of the day and rest. Good sleep, frequent walks in the fresh air, avoidance of stress, as well as spa treatment in many ways contribute to the speedy recovery of patients. Also, with vegetative neurosis, physiotherapy exercises can be indicated. Moderate but regular physical activity has a beneficial effect on the state of the autonomic nervous system and improves its ability to adequately perform its functions.
One of the priority areas of treatment is also psychotherapy. Regular sessions will help to calm the patient and get rid of psycho-emotional stress. The psychotherapist will help identify factors that contribute to the strengthening of the disease, and together with the patient will develop tactics to eliminate them.
As a drug therapy, drugs are usually prescribed to normalize sleep, painkillers, safe sedatives, as well as drugs whose action is directed directly to the regulation of the nervous system. The duration of administration and dosage of medications is determined by the doctor on an individual basis.
You have probably heard the term “lability”. What it is? Lability is the rate of flow of excitation in the nervous and muscle tissues, the rate of transition from a state of excitation to a state of rest and vice versa. The term comes from the Latin word labilis, which means unstable, sliding.
What does it mean? Different cells and tissues of the body react differently to nervous excitation and can transmit the received impulses at different speeds. The term “lability” was proposed to be used by the Russian physiologist N. E. Vvedensky in 1886. He studied the frequency of tissue stimulation and tissue response to persistent stimuli. Lability is expressed in the time required to restore performance after the received excitation. It depends on various factors and can decrease, for example, under the influence of alcoholic and narcotic substances, cold. It takes more time to recover to normal.
Lability is a phenomenon inherent in a person at the level of genes. Therefore, everyone has their own susceptibility to various kinds of mental disorders and diseases. If the lability indicators are low, then at the psychological level, people are less exposed to alcohol, nicotine, drug addiction and other addictions. But with prolonged exposure to the body, dependence can still arise and develop. With high rates of emotional lability, for example, after the first cigarette smoked, it is easier for people to stop smoking, while no tangible changes in the body will occur. But if the lability is low, even if a person is not an adherent of an unhealthy lifestyle and addictions, but for some reason tried the same cigarette, most likely he will not be able to refuse it on his own.
This term is used in medicine, psychology, psychiatry. There are social, emotional, mental, vegetative, intellectual and other variants of the use of this term.
Emotional lability is responsible for frequent mood swings without significant reasons. What is it - a normal state, or a signal of the presence of a disease?
Often this is a symptom of a problem or disease of the brain, may be the result of a traumatic brain injury. The emotional state can change several times a day, even from minor events or circumstances. This takes into account the depth of such a change.
Actions can be harsh and thoughtless. The consequences of such actions are reflected in the human condition. Mood, sleep, appetite change, there is a desire to retire or be only with a very close person, then to be in a noisy place, in company, is reflected in well-being, expressed in relation to a vision of the future or a judgment about the past.
High emotional lability is characteristic of people with increased anxiety. Often such people are perceived as frivolous, superficial, since their actions and deeds are difficult to explain and understand. Often the cause of this condition is the presence of a situation that injures the human psyche. And when the irritant is eliminated, emotional lability also decreases or disappears. The help of a psychologist under such circumstances will have a positive effect, but will not remove the causes and therefore will not have an effective result. Sometimes you need the help of a psychiatrist, treatment with special drugs that affect the brain, and sometimes the intervention of a neuropathologist and a neurosurgeon. You can take sedative herbal remedies. And it is very important to reconsider the way of life - to pay more attention to walking in the fresh air, playing sports, to avoid those factors that may be the cause of such a condition.
Responsible for the ability to adapt to the current situation, for the transition from the stage of reflection to action, for switching attention from one task to another without making mistakes. These are very valuable qualities in the modern world, where the flow of information is growing and there is a need for quick learning, responding to the most necessary, essential at the moment. It is very important to have creative thinking, the desire to learn quickly, to perceive new things. Special tests have been developed to determine the level of intellectual lability. What does it mean? If the level is high enough, we can talk about the good ability of the nervous system to move from excitation processes to the process of inhibition. A person can adequately respond to a changing situation, make the right decisions, acquire new knowledge.
Vegetative lability - what is it?
In medicine, the study of lability is important for determining autonomic disorders in the human body and what causes them. After all, the vegetative-nervous system is responsible for all the most vital processes and functions of the body, such as reproduction, body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, for various biochemical processes. Even in children and adolescents, the manifestation of these disorders can be observed, which subsequently leads to serious health problems. It is difficult to diagnose this manifestation, since it can be expressed by headaches, dizziness, heart palpitations, nausea, sleep problems, tinnitus, irritability and other manifestations. In any case, you need to contact specialists to detect the problem and avoid consequences and complications.
blood pressure lability
Another expression found in medicine. It is characterized by a constant or temporary manifestation of either an increase or a decrease in blood pressure. Such jumps can manifest themselves through headaches in the back of the head, “flies” and double vision, sleep disturbance, decreased attention and memory, numbness of the limbs, as unreasonable excitability and irritability. These symptoms need to be paid attention to and also try to determine the cause of their occurrence. It is necessary to measure blood pressure twice a day for about two weeks and try to change your lifestyle - nutrition, sleep patterns, be more in the fresh air, pay attention to sports, reduce physical and psycho-emotional stress.
Social lability - what is it?
It manifests itself as fear during contact with strangers, in public speaking, in relationships, contacts with other persons. It is difficult for such people to adapt to new places, they are afraid to meet new people, to start something unknown to themselves. Sometimes even intervention and assistance from specialists is required.
